Reception - Squirrels

Welcome to the Foundation Stage, the first steps of your child's learning journey at the Spetisbury CE Primary School.

Every child deserves the best possible start in their education and through parental and teacher support they can fulfill their potential. The Reception year will lay the foundations to enable your child to become an independent and self-motivated learner throughout their whole school career.

The Reception teacher is Mrs Sinclair and is closely supported by Mrs Butler.

In the Foundation Stage there are seven areas of learning:

  • Communication and Language.
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

These areas of learning are taught through different topics during the school year. More information can be found on the Early Years page of this website. Please follow the link below.

Tapestry Early Years Foundation Stage Profile

We record the children’s learning through observations, photographs and samples of work in all areas of learning both indoors and outdoors. These are stored online using an app called Tapestry.

Parents and carers can view this at anytime, and together with valuable comments from parents/carers make a wonderful record of the children’s development throughout their Reception year.

On Friday, Squirrels visited Traveller's Rest Farm. We had such an exciting day! We travelled there by coach and then went round the farm in a big trailer pulled by a tractor.

Firstly we visited the grain store and were able to touch the grain, then we were able to walk into the fields to see the crops up close. We went into fields growing wheat, barley, oil seed rape and poppies.

We saw cows and sheep in the fields. We were able to get very close to the bull in the trailer!

At the end of the afternoon, we all had a turn to feed some lambs

We are enjoying our new topic on vehicles. We are learning about different types of vehicles and what they are used for.

We counted the traffic which was passing the school. We all had a go at recording the count using tally marks. We saw lots of cars, vans, lorries and a couple of buses during the week, but we were disappointed that we did not see any police cars, ambulances or fire engines to record!

Mr Baxter bought a ticket for the bus bound for Australia!

This week we have been talking about weight and collecting items to weigh from round our class. First we held them in our hands and tried to decide whether they were lighter or heavier, then we tested our predictions by putting them in the balances. After we had weighed them we put them in order by weight. We had to use these words- light, lighter, lightest, heavy, heavier and heaviest.

Our topic this half-term is Pirates. We have been learning how pirates lived in the past. First we made our pirate role play area. We painted our ship and decorated our pirate area.

Treasure maps

We had to make our paper look old by painting it with watery paint and ripping along the sides. When the paper was dry we drew on the details. We added a compass and some of the details we had talked about in class such as 'x marks the spot', paths, trees, rivers and anything else we wanted to put on
